Edward Shockley’s love of music lives on

True Blue Jazz presents memorial scholarship to Cape senior Brenden Groll
April 14, 2022

True Blue Jazz founders Peggy Raley and Eddie Sherman kicked off their second season of First Wednesdays at The Pines in Rehoboth Beach on April 6. To start the evening, they presented a $1,000 scholarship to Cape Henlopen High School senior and jazz band member Brenden Groll. Although all scholarships are special, Sherman noted that this one is extra special because it’s the Edward Shockley Sr. Memorial Scholarship from money he donated to the True Blue Jazz Kids program. Ed Sr. passed away Oct. 24, 2021.

“It’s really come full circle,” Sherman said, noting the close ties he and his wife have to the Shockley family and their shared love of music. Sherman and Ed Shockley Jr. have been members of The Funsters for many years. Ed Sr. played the drums as does scholarship winner Groll, who has been named to the All State Jazz Band. Several members of the Shockley family were in attendance, including son Ed Jr. and Ed Sr.’s wife, Doris.

First Wednesdays continue through December. For seating and ticket information, go to TrueBlueJazz.org. This year’s 10th anniversary True Blue Jazz Festival is Oct. 12-16 at various venues in downtown Rehoboth Beach.
