Elite Connection Hockey Camp known locally as Camp Carrie
On the turf field of Legends Stadium at Cape Henlopen High School it’s mostly known as Carrie’s Camp. The Elite Connection Summer 2011 Field Hockey Camp, held July 5-8 and run in conjunction with Delaware Shore Field Hockey, doubled in numbers in just its second year as 90 athletes from peewees through high school received the highest levels of enthusiastic instruction each day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m
Olympians Carrie Lingo and Kate Barber Kinnear run a session of the camp in Lewes and another in Virginia Beach. Camp instructors include members of the 2008 United States Olympic Team and several former National Team members.
“We have about 12 coaches from the United States team current and retired,” Lingo said. “We have kids that have come all the way up from Virginia Beach combining vacation with a little field hockey." A group of three Virginia Beach girls came by and Carrie asked, “How old are you guys?” They answered in one voice, “We’re 11.”
“The youngest here is 6 and the oldest is 16,” Carrie said. “It’s really cool to see how the kids improved from last year. Most of the coaches are from the East Coast, and they are all staying at my parents' house, except for two who are allergic to cats, and they are staying at the Beacon Motel."
"Last year I noticed that a couple of moms were going back and forth for different sessions, so this year we had enough coaches to run one session for everyone," Carrie said.
Carrie was asked her reaction to how tough kids can be at such a young age and she said, ”Kate has the peewees, and she had them running stadium steps playing follow the leader. Imagine running the stadium when you're 6! But they really got into it.”
After a 30-minute break to bask in the shade of the field house and refuel, 90 girls went back to group instruction all looking pretty happy, considering it was about 100 degrees on the turf.
