Elks cycle to support first responders’ families

August 10, 2025

With the help of Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge 2540, two of its active members recently raised a combined $3,800 in support of first responders who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Denny Shook and Jim Futrell rode in the 38th annual Ben to the Shore Bike Tour. The 65-mile ride from Philadelphia to Atlantic City, N.J., is hosted by Families Behind the Badge Children’s Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting the families of fallen and critically injured first responders. Part of its mission is Honor the Fallen, Support the Survivors.

Shook and Futrell ride for Bucks Heroes, which raised over $53,000. As in years past, Cape Henlopen Elks were proud to donate $500 in support of their ride. The foundation ultimately raised $1.5 million from this year's ride to support its causes.

Shook served as a law enforcement officer in Pennsylvania for 41 years, now retired, and is active in many Elks activities. Futrell and Shook ride together with Sussex Cyclists, promoting safe and enjoyable cycling in lower Delaware.
