Elks share love of reading with local kindergarteners

April 26, 2026

To celebrate literacy and encourage a love of reading among young students, Cape Henlopen Elks lodge members recently visited Phillip C. Showell Elementary School in Selbyville.

Along with Elks Youth Activity Chair Terrie McKinley, Elks officers visited the Indian River School District facility March 19 to read aloud to the entire kindergarten population.

McKinley, a published local children’s author, brought along two of her books to present to about 60 kindergarten children. Students eagerly followed along as the guest readers shared the stories and illustrations.

Before leaving, the Elks provided each student with autographed copies of the books for them to take home to read again and again.

The Elks are grateful for their partnership with Showell Elementary school and its staff.  As part of its community involvement, lodge members have the opportunity to read with local children, provide them with books of their own, and help inspire them with curiosity, confidence and a lifelong love of reading.
