Evelyn Mackie Nilan, enjoyed the beach

Evelyn Mackie Nilan, 84, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022, in the presence of her loving family. Evelyn was born in West Grove, Pa., on Dec. 1, 1937. She attended a one-room, country school in Kemblesville, Pa., then graduated from Kennett High School in Kennett Square, Pa., in 1955. She was a homemaker until her children went to school. She then went to work at Kiddie World for 20 years, and then worked part time at Brewers Outlet for 27 years, where she enjoyed selling lotto tickets.

As her pastimes, she was an avid bowler for 40 years and traveled to various places throughout the United States with her team. She also enjoyed spending time at her beach home in Rehoboth with her family and friends, especially sitting on her porch. She always enjoyed watching her sons and grandsons play sports, and eating out at different restaurants. She loved preparing holiday dinners and spending time with her extended family.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, James “Reds”; her sons, James III and Frank; her sister, Nancy; sister-in-law, Patricia Konitzer; and her parents, Joseph and Mildred Mackie. She is survived by her grandsons, Colin (Whitney) and David; her brothers, Al Mackie (Nancy) of Wilmington, and Joseph Mackie (Diana) of Middletown; brothers-in-law, Thomas of Newark, and David of Kennett Square. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, -nephews, and very special friends, Sharon Butterworth and Cathy Slover. 

A viewing will be held from noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 26, McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. Entombment following service at Silverbrook Cemetery, 3300 Lancaster Pike, Wilmington.
