Events will cause lane closures, traffic delays

Runs, cycling, air show, balloon festival and powwow all happening in September

Several special events in September could cause traffic delays and temporary lane closures.

• Amish Country Bike Tour in Dover, 7 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 7. This year's tour will return to Legislative Mall. Routes are new this year, featuring 15-, 25-, 50-, 64- and 100-mile distances with rest stops at the Amish Schoolhouse, Harvest Ridge Winery and Painted Stave Distillery. • Bottle & Cork 10 Miler and 5K in Dewey Beach, beginning at 8 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 7. Runners will leave Dewey Beach heading to Rehoboth Beach, Henlopen Acres, the Boardwalk and returning to Dewey Beach for the 10-mile race. There will be a temporary right lane closure on Route 1 northbound from McKinley Avenue to Route 1A in Dewey. For further information, go to www.races2run.com.

• Nanticoke Indian Powwow, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 8. Festival grounds are located off Route 24 near Mt. Joy Road/Oak Orchard Road. Fire police will assist with traffic control at Mt. Joy Road and Piaffe Lane. For more information, go to www.nanticokeindians.org.

• Dewey Beach Triathlon/Duathlon/Aquabike, 7:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 14. There will be a lane shift north of Fred Hudson Road on Route 1 northbound, a right-lane closure on northbound Route 1 from north of Fred Hudson Road through Dewey Beach, and a left-lane closure southbound from Pelicans Pouch to Fred Hudson Road. Motorists should anticipate traffic delays from Dewey Beach to Fred Hudson Road. Message board signs will be in place. For more information, go to www.deweybeachtriathlon.com.

• Dover Air Force Base open house and air show, Saturday, Sept. 14, and Sunday, Sept. 15. Free admission at Dover Air Force Base will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a ceremony at 11 a.m. Aerial demonstrations will be from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Motorists should anticipate delays on Route 1 and Route 9 in Dover. • Balloons Over Sussex Festival, 2 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, and 2 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 15. The festival is located at the Delaware Coastal Business Park/Airport at 21788 Nanticoke Ave., Georgetown, and is hosted by The Sussex Academy Foundation. • Bethany Beach First Responders Sports Weekend, Saturday, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept. 22, including a half-marathon, half-marathon relay and 5K on Sept. 21 and a triathlon, duathlon, aquabike and triathlon- and duathlon-team relays on Sept. 22. Multiple single-lane closures will be in place on Route 1 northbound and southbound starting at 6 a.m. between Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach. Lane restrictions should be lifted by 11 a.m. In addition, there will be various shoulder closures along Route 1 northbound, and the right-turn lane from Route 1 northbound to Pennsylvania Avenue will be closed for the duration of the event.

On Sept. 22, cyclists will leave Garfield Parkway in Bethany Beach from 7:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. and continue on the shoulders of Route 1 northbound on Indian River Inlet bridge turning around on New Road near Dewey Beach. Cyclists will continue southbound on Route 1 on the bridge over the inlet, returning to Bethany Beach via Pennsylvania Avenue. For more information, go to www.bethanybeachtri.com.

• The 14th annual Dogfish Dash, 9 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 29. More than 2,000 runners, walkers and volunteers will be in Milton at the Dogfish Head Brewery, 6 Village Center Blvd. DelDOT, Delaware State Police, local police departments and fire police will be on site to monitor traffic.
