Fable brasserie to open in Rehoboth Beach

July opening in works for French-style eatery on Baltimore
July 7, 2016

A taste of French cuisine is coming to Rehoboth Beach in mid-July with the opening of Fable on Baltimore Avenue.

Taking over the space formerly occupied by Mixx, Fable is undergoing a renovation that owner Megan Kee says will give the space a familiar but different look. Kee said she isn’t changing much about the layout of the space; the bar will remain in the same location and the seated dining area will be in the main room down the stairs. Kee’s goal with the space was to make it brighter and more inviting; or as she said, “to bring the outside in.”

“It’s exciting because the space has not been touched for years,” she said.

Kee said Fable will open Thursday, July 14; if she can’t meet that date, she said she still plans to celebrate.

“I was going to dress up as Marie Antoinette and throw cupcakes from the balcony,” she said. “We’re going to have a little bit of fun that day regardless if we’re open to the public.”

Kee, a self-described nostalgia buff, said she wanted Fable to have the feel of long-gone Rehoboth favorite La La Land. Kee worked at the former Wilmington Avenue restaurant as a teenager, and she has brought on former La La Land Chef Rob Peck for La Fable.

Kee, who helped create Bramble and Brine on Rehoboth Avenue, said she was inspired to create a French restaurant because the closest ones were in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

“We’re very blessed to have a very diverse dining community. I noticed that we didn’t have this type of dining in our area,” she said.

Kee said she wants Fable to have the feeling of home but with a European flavor. She said the restaurant will be casual and fun but special enough for couples on date nights.

A native of the Rehoboth area, Kee said she has had the concept for Fable in mind for years but didn’t pursue it until the space at 26 Baltimore Ave. became available when Mixx closed.

“This is a really cool, new challenge,” she said. “To have an opportunity to take over something that has already been and make it mine.”

Kee said she wants Fable to have the feeling of going into an oasis when a diner walks down the steps into the restaurant.

“It really is a cool space. For Mixx, it was great. It was a speakeasy, cocktail place. I want to make it etherial,” she said.

Fable will be open daily from 4:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. For more information, email bonjourfable@gmail.com.
