FDR Fireside Chat with author Cliff Sloan set Nov. 5

October 27, 2023

The Lewes Public Library’s discussion series, Fireside Chats: Exploring the Roosevelt Legacy, hosted by Paul Sparrow, former director of the FDR Presidential Library and Museum, will host a conversation with author Cliff Sloan at 5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 5, in the library’s fireplace area, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes, and online via Zoom.

The two will discuss Sloan’s book “The Court at War: FDR, His Justices, and the World They Made.”

By the summer of 1941, in the ninth year of his presidency, Franklin Roosevelt had molded the Supreme Court. He appointed seven of the nine justices – the most by any president except George Washington – and handpicked the chief justice. Sloan will share an inside look at the dangers of this unseemly closeness between the Supreme Court justices and their political patron, and how Roosevelt forever altered the most powerful legal institution in the country, producing consequences that endure today.

Browseabout Books will be on hand with books for purchase, and Sloan will conduct a book signing after the discussion.

Seating is limited, and registration is required. To register for either online or in-person attendance, go to lewes.lib.de.us or call 302-645-2733.

Sloan is a professor of constitutional law and criminal justice at Georgetown University Law Center. He has argued before the Supreme Court seven times and has served in all three branches of the federal government. He is also the author of ‘”The Great Decision: Jefferson, Adams, Marshall and the Battle for the Supreme Court,” and has written commentary for numerous national publications.
