Film, discussion on unaccompanied foreign children offered in Rehoboth Nov. 2
Retired Immigration Judge Joan Churchill will be moderating a special public program, "Unaccompanied Foreign Children Coming to the US - in 1939 and Now," a film and discussion program on unaccompanied foreign children coming to the United States.
At 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 2, at Seaside Jewish Community Center, Judge Churchill will introduce the acclaimed 2013 documentary film “50 Children - The Rescue Mission of Mr. & Mrs. Kraus” and then facilitate a discussion comparing U.S. immigration law and policy and its impact on children at the time of the Holocaust and now.
“50 Children” presents a true story of the Krauses, an ordinary couple from Philadelphia, Pa. who traveled to Nazi controlled Vienna in 1939 at personal risk to themselves, and brought 50 unaccompanied Jewish children to the United States. Gilbert Kraus, a business lawyer, successfully navigated the United States immigration system, then governed by strict quotas, to arrange for immigrant visas for the children.
Now, 75 years later, 50,000 or more unaccompanied children from Central America have come to the U.S. to get away from violent conditions at home.
All are invited to see the film and join the discussion. Advance registration will be appreciated. Walk-ins are welcome.
The program is free. Seaside Jewish Community Center is located at 18970 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach. Seaside is handicapped accessible.
