Fireside chat to host ‘Matisse at War’ author
Historian Paul Sparrow will be joined by author Christopher C. Gorham for a Fireside Chat at 5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 5, in the fireplace area at the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes. The event will also stream live via Zoom.
They will discuss Gorham’s new book, “Matisse at War: Art and Resistance in Nazi Occupied France.”
While many renowned figures fled France during World War II, artist Henri Matisse took refuge in the city of Nice, becoming a source of inspiration for his nation. Gorham will reveal the previously untold history of Matisse and his family during this critical time and their passionate roles in the French Resistance, including the prodigious, revolutionary work the artist produced in the face of fascism, violence and hate.
Gorham is a lawyer, educator and acclaimed author whose books include “The Confidante.” He holds degrees in history from Tufts University and the University of Michigan, and a JD from Syracuse University, where he served on the editorial staff of the Syracuse Law Review.
Sparrow is former director of the FDR Presidential Library and Museum.
