First Responders Sports Weekend directors donate to Bethany fire company
The inaugural Bethany Beach First Responders Sports Weekend, formerly known as the Bethany Beach First Responders Triathlon-Duathlon-Aquabike, took place Sept. 22-23. Despite the rain and wind, nearly 1,000 athletes came out and participated in two days of events featuring a half-marathon, triathlon, duathlon, aquabike, 5K and relay races.
“We were thrilled to bring the Sports Weekend back to Bethany Beach, where all of this started back in 2012,” said Race Director and co-founder Ernie Felici. “Where better to be than in beautiful Bethany?”
The weekend-long event is a USA Triathlon Mid Atlantic Championship-sanctioned event produced by Focus Multisports in partnership with Racine Racing and J&A MultiSports.
Proceeds from the weekend benefited Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company, first responders and other area nonprofits. A donation of $20,000 was made to the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company, and another $5,000 donation was made to supporting area nonprofit organizations.
“We are very pleased [with the donation] and look forward to another great event in 2019," said BBVFC Fire Chief Brian Martin.
“The town and its residents support us unconditionally, and we are therefore elated to give back to the firefighters and other first responders,” said Race Director and co-founder Rick Hundley.
