Flashback football on the fields behind the old Lewes School

Cape Pop Warner football begins 2018 campaign
August 3, 2018

Pop Warner football and cheerleading are old school community sports, and Aug. 1 just past suppertime, the players and cheerleaders rolled in for the first practice of 2018 held behind the old school in Lewes where the legends and ghosts of games past go back to World War II.

The weather was stifling, hot with no wind, and squadrons of dragonflies strafed the fields.

“I’m meticulous about fundamentals,” coach Dwight Tingle told a group of players who looked at each other to see if any knew the meaning of meticulous.

There are four grouping of teams based on age and weight that include Pee Wees, Junior Pee Wees, Mitey Mites and Tiny Mites.

And on the field where softball used to be played, the cheerleader hopefuls gathered for the first practice of the season. There are easily enough cheerleaders to cover the four teams.

The Cape Vikings play in the Henlopen Pop Warner League, which includes a Northern Division and Southern Division.

Teams in the North include Smyrna/Clayton, Dover/CR, Milford, Harrington, Cape, Woodbridge and Sussex Central.

The Southern Division includes teams from Berlin, Md., Delmar, Eastern Shore Gators, Laurel, Lower Sussex and Wicomico, Md. Harry Hudson is president of the league and also coaches at Cape.

Games start in late August. Stay tuned for the schedule.
