Franklin Andrew Exter, truly a ‘gearhead’

April 2, 2017

Franklin Andrew Exter, 47, of Newark, formerly of Rehoboth Beach, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 30, 2017, at his home. Andrew was born in Milford, April 27, 1969, to Sy Exter and Dorothy Anne (Coleman). He was a graduate of Cape Henlopen High School Class of 1989 and he received his certificate from Motorcycle Mechanics Institute. He had previously worked as a mechanic for Amtrak, Snookies Speed Parts in Milton and the North Atlantic Marine Group.

Andrew was truly a "gearhead," he worked on automobiles, trains, motorcycles and boats. He enjoyed turning wrenches on several different race cars that ran at the Delaware International Speedway in Delmar. His goal with every automobile, race car or motorcycle purchase was the desire to make it go faster. Andrew also enjoyed living near the water and would spend countless hours fishing. He will be fondly remembered as a loving husband, son, brother and friend.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Anne Coleman in 2016. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara (Ridings) Exter; his father, Sy Exter of Newport Beach, Calif.; his brother, Seth Exter of Milton; his stepdaughter, Jayme Fisher and her husband Don of Newark; his stepgranddaughter, Adalynn Fisher; and countless friends.

A gathering will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, Friday, April 7, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where a celebration of his life will begin at noon. Interment will be private.
