Frederick D. Thomas Middle School taking shape

New facility set to open in fall 2024 next to Lewes elementary
July 10, 2023

Much has changed at Frederick D. Thomas Middle since a late April update on the school under construction in Lewes.

The school is set to open to students in fall 2024 on the site of the former Shields Elementary and is named after Frederick D. Thomas, the first African American administrator in the Cape Henlopen School District.

Dave Frederick, former Beacon Middle principal, has taken over as principal for the new school, which was approved by referendum in March 2018 as the district’s third middle school.

The new building sits just across Sussex Drive from Lewes Elementary School, which opened in April 2022. The two schools will share a campus that stretches from Savannah Road to DuPont Avenue.
