“Hello, my friend, hello. Just called to let you know.” – Neil Diamond.
Cape senior Sydney Pedersen can shoot the three-ball. She’s not bashful because that is her game.
Pedersen dropped five from downtown (a quintuple triple) and four of five from the free-throw line to lead Cape to a 73-46 victory Jan. 30.
Cape improved to 7-6 on the season, while the Panthers dropped to 7-5.
Pedersen also hit five three-pointers Dec. 12 in a 55-32 win at Polytech. The Panthers ran off seven straight wins after that loss before losing three in a row to Caesar Rodney, Sussex Tech and Cape.
Cape had a full lineup, which many times it does not, with reasons ranging from hockey tournaments and college visits to dancing, internal discipline and run-of-the-mill injuries. The season has been a slog, but when the Vikings are synchronized, they can run the court and put points on the board.
“We are fast on the defensive end and can run the floor with anyone,” said coach Lauren Carra.
Dania Cannon, who is working back into playing shape after ACL surgery, ran the point and scored 14 points for Cape, while Niya Mosley came off the bench to score 10.
Alia Marshall added eight points, while Mel McCloy added eight points and three bounce pass assists inside, made popular by Princeton, which is where Mel is heading in the fall.
The Panthers were paced by Jazmin Kellam with 13 and Courtney Turner with 12.
Cape will play at Caesar Rodney Friday, Feb. 2, and at St. Elizabeth Monday, Feb. 5.
