August 16, 2012

When most folks in Dewey Beach were just getting up the morning of Aug. 12, the Dewey Beach Lions Club Pancake Breakfast and Best Buddies 5K Run/ Walk was taking place with three brothers from Camp Hill, Pa. - Brian, Mark and Kevin Fuller - breaking course records and finishing first, second, and third in the 5K.

Winner Brian Fuller tied his own course record in a time of 15:21. Fuller hit the one-mile mark in 4:40. He ran a 4:08:20 mile in 2007 while attending school at Penn State.

Mark Fuller finished second in a time of 15:55, and Kevin Fuller came in third in a time of 16:42.  All three brothers went to Penn State and ran track. The family was in the Cape Region for their annual summer vacation, which always includes a Dewey Beach running event.

The women's winner, Mary Dell from Hummelstown, Pa.,  set a new course record for the ladies with a time of 17:28. Dell was an All-American at Shippensburg University and Women's Student-Athlete of the Year. Dell is also the girlfriend of winner Brian Fuller.

Other course records were set the same day.  At age 75, Elizabeth Frazier from Chestertown, Md., ran 40:41 to break the 75-79 age group record. Fred Tower, 80, from Washington, D.C., broke the 80 and over record in a time of 40:06.

The Dewey Beach Lions Club served an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast for all the runners to enjoy. The Dewey Beach Lions and Best Buddies joined together to host this inaugural 5K and breakfast. For complete race results, go to Races2run.com.
