Fundraising efforts at the Starboard exceed $500K for B+ Foundation
The Starboard restaurant in Dewey Beach marks a significant milestone this year by raising more than $500,000 for one of its favorite charity organizations, The B+ Foundation.
For the past 13 years, the Starboard has partnered with the B+ Foundation to raise money through its Black Tag VIP Auction, and with this year’s amount of $85,870, the total for this annual fundraiser now stands at $599,147.
Keith “Toastie” Kirk, chief caretaker at the Starboard, said, “In the face of childhood cancer, every act of kindness becomes a symbol of hope. This fundraiser isn't just about the dollars; it's about standing beside brave children and their families.”
The B+ Foundation was founded by Joe McDonough to honor his late son, Andrew, who sadly lost his battle with childhood leukemia. McDonough notes that many people lose their jobs when their children become ill with cancer, because their care becomes a full-time job. So the money raised by The Starboard through the annual fundraiser provides direct financial relief to these families in need.
The proceeds from this year will help 71 families stay in their homes this year, according to McDonough. As with so many of the Starboard fundraisers, all of the money raised goes directly to the organization to help people.
The Black Tag VIP fundraiser is an auction offering several VIP passes for the Starboard, the main draw being bragging rights and participating in the annual event to support a good cause. It’s a testament to not only the overall culture of the Starboard, but also the way owner Steve “Monty” Montgomery and his team have cultivated an atmosphere of giving in the name of great fun.
Here is a look at how this particular fundraiser has grown over the years: 2012 - $14,731 raised; 2013 - $12,168; 2014 - $ 12,000; 2015 - $15,116; 2016 - $15,470; 2017 - $20,836; 2018 - $27,980; 2019 - $45,019; 2020 - COVID; 2021 - $83,468; 2022 - $98,194; 2023 - $101,484; 2024 - $81,542; and 2025 - $85,870, for a grand total of $599,147.
“This growth is something we are really proud of,” said Montgomery. “We like to see people showing up to support causes like fighting childhood cancer, and these organizations are doing important work for the people they serve.”
The Starboard holds a variety of events throughout the summer to benefit community organizations and charities, from the Running of the Bull to Dewey Goes Pink, and many more. Montgomery and Kirk extend their thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s Black Tag Auction, as well as to Joe McDonough and his foundation, for helping thousands through furthering research and providing direct financial assistance through the B+ Foundation.
