Gallery One in Ocean View announced its exhibit Same Place, Different Takes – Funland, will be open to the public Wednesday, Aug. 1, to Tuesday, Aug. 28.
The Gallery One artists were challenged to paint the same subject, Funland in Rehoboth Beach. The lazy days of summer for many vacationers and locals include a visit to this local family-run amusement park. The artists sifted through memories and photos to attempt the complicated structures of old and new rides, and to portray the energy and delight of the children in one of their favorite places at the beach.
Children, parents and grandparents have visited Funland since 1962, and it is filled with memories. Mary Beth Paterson’s oil, “So Many Memories of Funland,” captures the excitement of the Boardwalk entry into Funland, where children’s joy and glee can be heard from inside. “What is it about the beach that creates those nostalgic memories? The sounds of the games and the carousel, the smell of the ocean and Boardwalk and the images ... of sunbaked, barefoot kids rushing down the Boardwalk with their handful of quarters headed to Funland,” said Paterson.
“Lights, happy sounds and lively activity for everyone is the experience at Funland,” said Lesley McCaskill. “Hearing the little bells of the boats takes me right to memories of my children and now grandchildren of the magical place. ‘Family Funland,’ acrylic captures the bright lights, and the large gestural strokes express the joyfulness and energy that I feel each time I visit.”
“Funland Tickets,” fluid acrylic by Dale Sheldon, captures the movement of the many rides. “Funland in the summer is full of sounds, colors, and crowds of people! It is a fun place to be, happy chaos. Just buy a bunch of tickets, and you have fun for hours,” said Sheldon.
Laura Hickman’s “Funland” pastel and ink shows Funland the end of the day. “Funland comes alive with lights, colors, movement and happy, happy people,” she said.
