Gallery One welcomes artist John Schisler

December 5, 2025

Classical and contemporary realism artist John Schisler has joined Gallery One in Ocean View.

Schisler’s artistic education began at the age of 17, at the Conrad-Miller Studio in Fells Point, Md., where he studied the techniques of the Dutch Masters, utilizing Maroger medium. His teachers were artists Nancy Lee Conrad and Melvin Miller, both students of French painter and scholar Jacques Maroger (1884-1962), a painter and former curator of the Louvre Museum, Paris, and the inventor of Maroger medium.

Schisler learned to make and use ‘black oil,” which is the basis for the mediums of such masters as Titian, Rubens and Rembrandt. The advantage of this medium is its ability to obtain the qualities of color, shadow and brilliance found only in the masters’ paintings. Keeping with this tradition, he makes the black oil that is then used to make the medium as well as his oil paint, by mixing it with powdered pigments.

Since 2011, Schisler has been pursuing a full-time career in art, winning many local and national awards, and participating nationally in gallery and professional society shows and competitions. In 2018, he began to expand his focus from exclusively still life painting to plein air, reflecting his love of nature and the outdoors. In 2020 he was juried into Plein Air Easton in Maryland.

Schlsler’s professional artistic memberships include Oil Painters of America, National Oil & Acrylic Painter's Society and the International Guild of Realism. His work has been featured in many publications, including American Art Collector.

Schisler’s work can be seen from from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., daily, at Gallery One, 32 Atlantic Ave., Ocean View.
