Gazette’s sports team does it right

May 6, 2025

I would like to take a moment to recognize and applaud the Cape Gazette for its unwavering commitment to covering high school sports in the Cape Region. In a time when local journalism is often stretched thin, the Gazette’s consistent, in-depth reporting on student-athletes stands out as both a service and a gift to the community.

Special thanks go to Aaron Mushrush, Dan Cook and the legendary Dave Frederick, whose tireless efforts week after week bring the stories of our young athletes to life. Their dedication not only shines a light on the accomplishments of students at Cape Henlopen, Sussex Academy and Delmarva Christian, but also fosters a sense of pride and unity across school lines. Whether it's through stunning photography, heartfelt features, or witty and insightful commentary, they tell stories that matter – to the kids on the field, to their families and to the broader community that cheers them on.

Look around the rest of the state, and it quickly becomes clear: not every community has a local paper with this level of investment in youth sports. Too often, student-athletes in other regions are left in the shadows, their achievements going unnoticed outside of their own schools. Here, our athletes have a platform. They have visibility. And that’s thanks to the hard work of the Cape Gazette team.

This coverage doesn’t just matter to the players. Parents, grandparents and even out-of-state family members rely on the Gazette’s reporting to stay connected. The stories become keepsakes and points of pride. And the commitment extends beyond the sports pages – the vibrant school section captures the full spectrum of student life, celebrating academic, artistic and extracurricular success with the same enthusiasm.

Thank you, Cape Gazette, for investing in our youth and for reminding us all of the value of local journalism done right. Your work makes a real difference.
