Girl Scout Pink Flamingo Flock returns for summer

May 20, 2018

Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Service Unit 30 Older Girls are once again planning a European adventure, and their Pink Flamingo flock has returned to town. The Travel Group, led by Janet Maher, comprises girls from all over the council. They range in age from 14 to 18, and they belong to their individual Girl Scout troops as well as this special-interest troop. Past trips for the group have included Washington, D.C., New York City, Savannah, Ga., and their most recent trip in 2016 to London, Switzerland and Italy. Their current trip is being planned for summer 2019; the girls will be traveling to London, Paris and Barcelona.

"The girls are raising the funds for their trip through their annual cookie sales, as well as other fundraising activities, and that's where our Pink Flamingo flock fits in,” said Maher. "Our girls raised over $8,000 for their 2016 trip with our Flock Your Friends fundraiser, and since we are one year out, the flock has returned. The girls had such a great time flocking in the past that their mascot is a stuffed pink flamingo they named Lewis; he now travels with us and even has his own Facebook page."

For a $25 donation, the public can order a surprise flocking of a friend. The girls will, under cover of dusk, drop off 50 bright pink flamingos to roost on the lawn for 36 hours, with a yard sign and a flyer explaining the flocking. The person arranging the flocking can either claim the gift or remain anonymous. If pink flamingos aren't one’s cup of tea, one can also purchase flock insurance to protect the lawn from the birds.

"It’s all in good fun and a great way for the community to support our girls on their adventures," said Kathleen Espisto, Girl Scout troop leader and parent of one of the girls traveling in 2019.

The flock is available from now until Sept. 15.
