Girls on the Run to host Lunafest fundraiser April 11

Girls on the Run Delaware, a transformational character development program serving girls statewide, will host Lunafest, a traveling festival of films by, about and for women, from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 11, at the Lewes History Museum in the  the Margaret H. Rollins Community Center, 101 Adams Ave., Lewes

“This unique event is filled with great food, fun, films and friendship,” said Kim Chitty, Girls on the Run Delaware executive director. The films will run continuously in a separate room, while food and friendship will be shared in the main area of the museum.

Tickets are $60 in advance and $65 at the door. A special rate of $40 for those under age 30 is also available. To purchase, go to gotrde.org.

Films to be screened are: “Reclaim Your Water”; “Miss Chelove: From Java to the Streets of DC”; “Pete”; “This is Beth”; “More Than I Want to Remember”; “Syed Family Xmas Eve Game Night”; and “Swimming Through.”

Proceeds will help provide scholarships for Girls on the Run participants in Sussex County.

In 2023 alone, 60% of participants received financial assistance and 1,350 girls received $190,000 in scholarship funding.

“We’re so grateful for the support of our dynamic host committee of local women and generous sponsors in helping to make this event a success,” said Chitty. Sponsors include M&T Bank, Coastal Cottage Renovations, Rehoboth Beach Running Company, Mermaid’s Kitchen and Lewes Historical Society.

Girls on the Run Delaware is a statewide nonprofit that has expanded rapidly in Sussex County in recent years. The innovative afterschool program meets twice a week for eight weeks in the spring and fall seasons. Girls in third to eighth grades train for a 5K with interactive lessons that encourage positive physical, emotional, social and mental development.

More than 1,300 girls are currently participating in the 2024 spring season, and over 28,000 have been served since the program’s inception in 2005. Girls on the Run empowers girls from start to finish.
