Gold dominates Blue 39-14 in high school all-star football game

June 20, 2011

A slew of Henlopen Conference players made a big splash at "The Tub" Saturday night, June 18. Tubby Raymond Field is the name of the turf at Delaware Stadium where the Gold squad throttled the Blue 39-14 in the 56th annual Blue-Gold All-Star game. The event raises monies for the Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens with Intellectual Disabilities.

Briean Boddy, Blue quarterback out of Delcastle, broke out in the first quarter, getting into the second line of Gold defenders, and no one laid a hand on him as he scampered 30 yards for a touchdown. The T.J. Dematteis kick made the score 7-0.

The Gold team, coached by Fred Johnson of Lake Forest, responded with 26 unanswered points in the second quarter, employing an array of weapons featuring a 1-yard touchdown run by Devon Showell of Indian River, a 74-yard strike to Dante Shells from his Caesar Rodney quarterback teammate Seth McFail, a pair of short touchdown runs by Desmond Sivels of Sussex Tech, and Quadir Bryant from Lake Forest running all over the field.

Bryant finished with a game-record 240 yards rushing on 26 carries, breaking the mark set by Wilmington High's Charlie Cox in the inaugural all-star game in 1956.

The Gold amassed 457 total yards in the game compared to 238 for the Blue. The Blue had won the last five all-star games.

Notes: Kyle McCoy of Cape started at strong safety and played great on run support and pass defense. Justin Benson-Reid of Cape played an array of positions including offensive tackle and outside linebacker. Malcolm Bowden of Sussex Central made some great plays from his linebacker position.

Bill Collick 1970, Dan Paskins 1985 and Tony Taylor 2006 were all voted outstanding lineman for the Gold when they played in the games.

John Marvel of Sussex Central 1961, Henry White of Cape 1974, Dutch Hoffman of Newark 1977, and Clinton Bunting 1986 were all voted outstanding player the year they played in the game.

The game was played in front of a crowd of 6,700; the record for the game is 14,000.
