More than 150 people enjoyed a gorgeous day and a full field of lady golfers for the 17th annual Pinky Returns golf tournament in support of the Julie Dickson Foundation’s efforts to empower women.
The tournament was held July 21 at Kings Creek Country Club.
The foundation was established to empower women in the spirit of Julie Dickson’s lifelong advocacy for women, young athletes and small business owners. Dickson was an athlete, an educator, a school social worker, a coach and a small business owner. Some of her more notable achievements included coaching field hockey, basketball, track, tennis and lacrosse, including coaching for Brown University. She helped form the U.S. Field Hockey Federation. She later built a State Farm Agency from the ground up and was a city councilwoman in Lancaster, Pa.
Her foundation has provided $38,000 in scholarships to talented young women at Delaware Technical Community College and other monies to the Strive Foundation.
Dr. Bobbi Barends, Delaware Tech vice president and campus director, shared moving stories of how the foundation has changed lives for young women through its scholarships. Last year, three young women received scholarships, and one of those girls graduated first in her family from college and completely debt-free, partially due to Pinky Returns.
