Gong practitioners to perform at Lewes studio Feb. 23

Mike Hall with Julie Fisher use gong, chimes, bowls for inspiring sounds
February 19, 2019

Mike Hall, musician and gong practitioner from Salisbury, Md., will perform with Julie Fisher of Gifted Alchemy Saturday, Feb. 23, at The Yoga Studio, 33427 Fairfield Road, Lewes at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $25 payable at the door.

The sound of the gong is primitive. For Hall the sound echoes the beginning of the universe. He says, “My love for the gong started when I heard a performance by Tatsuya Nakatani. He used a bow instead of striking it, eliciting a sound similar to whales.” Fellow collaborator for Saturday’s event Julie Fisher adds, “I first experienced the clarifying power of gong when I was living in New York City. I went to the same yoga class every Sunday for years because they played gong at the end of class. I could literally feel the vibrations of the gong release stress and tension from my mind and body. I always felt clear, grounded and happy after hearing a gong.”

The collaboration was inspired after Hall vacationed in Kaua’i, where Fisher once lived. She says, “Living on Kaua’i was a formative experience. It taught me how to listen, how to rest, how to follow inspiration, how to be grateful to be alive. I find people here are seeking ways to be more connected to nature, so Mike and I created this event to take listeners on a sound-inspired vacation.”

Hall and Fisher will use Koshi chimes which are handmade instruments from France, as well as crystal singing bowls and voice. “The melodies of the Koshi chimes transport listeners to wellsprings within their imagination,” says Fisher. “People who hear the chimes often experience vivid happy images.”

Participants of the event will make themselves comfortable lying in a supported position on blankets on the floor or seated in chairs. Those seeking creative breakthroughs are encouraged to bring a journal to free write while listening to the performance.

Hall is an amateur multi-instrumentalist with a deep love for organic acoustic sounds and music.
