Good Ole Boy Foundation wants living nativity on The Circle

Action is latest move in controversy over religious displays on public property
December 6, 2019

Sussex County-based Good Ole Boy Foundation is not letting a little red tape stand in its way.

The group is planning to stage a living nativity on The Circle in downtown Georgetown starting next week, according to an announcement on the group's Facebook page. They plan to have the nativity from 6 to 8 p.m. every night until Christmas Eve.

Whether the nonprofit organization can get a permit to use The Circle is up to Georgetown officials. Georgetown Town Manager Gene Dvornick could not be reached for comment because he was out of the office Dec. 5 as the Cape Gazette went to press.

The action comes after the traditional nativity scene placed on The Circle by Georgetown Wesleyan Church was prohibited this year following a change in the Town of Georgetown's policies for displays on The Circle. Unattended private displays are no longer permitted.

Under the new policy, applications for displays on The Circle will be prioritized in the following order: town sponsored events; other governmental or public health/safety related events; special events that are open to the public without charge; and special events with a charge.

“In light of recent decisions made by the town, we understand many are not happy. We also understand we don’t know the entire story, and we are not in their shoes. In addition, we don’t stand for or support any of the negative comments toward the Georgetown mayor or town council. Let us not forget the true meaning of Christmas folks,” the foundation’s Facebook post notes. “We are really excited for this opportunity for our community to come together and shine.”

The foundation is looking for volunteers and donations. Go to goodoleboyfoundation.com for more information.

The 10-piece nativity scene previously placed on The Circle by Georgetown Wesleyan Church is being cleaned and repaired by volunteers at Shepherd's Office, 408 N. Bedford St., Georgetown. The organization is looking for a new home for the display. Shepherd's Office provides services to those in need, including the local homeless.
