With Rehoboth’s beautiful beaches behind him, Gov. John Carney last month launched the Keep DE Litter Free initiative.
The campaign aims to increase awareness about litter in Delaware, partner with local officials to pursue anti-litter policies and reduce litter in Delaware.
The governor was joined members of the General Assembly, local leaders and environmental advocates to launch the initiative, in partnership with Keep Delaware Beautiful.
“Every Delawarean can play a role in helping to Keep Delaware Beautiful by committing to do their part,” said Julie Miro Wenger, Keep Delaware Beautiful executive director. “We hope to help change behavior.”
According to a press release, a 2018 study from Keep Delaware Beautiful and Delaware reported more than 6,000 pieces of litter for every mile of Delaware roadway surveyed. The study said cigarette butts, plastic bags, aluminum cans, and glass bottles accounted for a significant percentage of roadway trash. Carney also supports legislation to ban single-use plastic bags in Delaware.
