Grant funds student’s culinary education trip to Italy

August 6, 2025

A group of Delaware Technical Community College culinary arts students recently took part in a 10-day study abroad trip to Sorrento and Rome, Italy.

For a young chef, a trip to Italy is the ultimate source for culinary education and inspiration.

“We visited a Michelin-star restaurant, and the chef was so inspiring. The way he talked about food and answered all our questions made me realize that food is not just food. It can bring back memories, and when there’s a nice presentation, you can taste it with your mind,” said Alondra Estrada, who was awarded a grant from Paul Kares to cover program expenses. The Delaware nonprofit supports young culinary and performing artists.

The trip also included cooking classes, a tour of the Amalfi Coast, Italian language classes, winery tours and visits to Roman landmarks including the Colosseum.

A recent Delaware Tech graduate, Estrada currently works at Bethany Blues in Bethany Beach. “I want to focus on my career and earn money,” she said. “Then I want to get my bachelor’s degree.” She also works in the kitchen of The Room at Cedar Grove in Lewes, which is managed by Paul Kares.
