Groome celebrates 'Back to Church' weekend
Historic Groome United Methodist Church celebrated "Back to Church" weekend with a variety of events on Sept. 20 including a free yard sale and barbecue lunch, prayer wall, children's games and tours of the church, which dates back to 1904.
On Sept. 21, The Delmarva Ramblers were the guest musicians at the 9 a.m. worship service with a brunch following the service.
Local historian Hazel Brittingham, who has been a member of the church for more than 80 years, said the church is named after the Groom railroad family who donated one parcel of two owned by the church. At some point in time, the letter "e" was added to the name, she said.
Brittingham said she has seen a lot of changes – and 18 different preachers – at Groome. "There was a time when the church was your life," she said
