When Rose Sabia moved to Delaware almost a decade ago, she couldn’t find work as a groomer. But her persistence and passion for animals prompted her to start a business out of her home, Grooming by Rose.

On Feb. 2, after 9 years and almost 1,200 dogs, Grooming by Rose moved into a space at 26582 John J. Williams Highway in Millsboro.

Sabia built her business from the ground up.

“It’s amazing to see it come this far,” Sabia said. “I started by posting flyers wherever I could. After months and months, it started spreading by word of mouth, and that is the best type of advertising.”

Now Grooming by Rose has over 100 regulars and Sabia looks to add more at the new location.

Sabia and her fellow groomer, Robin Skuby, will now have a 1,000-square-foot workspace, as opposed to 300 square feet in Sabia’s home. With the new space and prime location, Sabia says the business can grow exponentially.

What makes Grooming by Rose special is the care Sabia and Skuby offer the animals.

“We’re considered power groomers,” Sabia noted. “Most groomers do about four dogs a day. We’ve done 16, but that doesn’t mean we don’t do as good of a job,” she said. “We care about the dogs. We bathe them, put flea medicine on them, and help them in any way we can.”

Grooming by Rose also works with Grass Roots Rescue, grooming and helping dogs that are up for adoption.

Sabia also does a bit of rescuing herself. When a customer was no longer able to take care of a 19-year-old dog, Sabia decided to take the dog instead of letting it be put down.

“Animals love you so unconditionally,” Sabia said. “Even the ones that are blind, have lost a leg, or have had a stroke. We want to help them all as much as we can.”
