Hard-to-find hostas up for auction May 4

A public auction aimed at gardening enthusiasts in search of hostas they just can’t find at local nurseries will be held at the Dixie Regional Hosta Convention set for 7:30 to 9 p.m., Saturday, May 4, at the Fairfield Inn on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach.

The auction will include some rare and hard-to-find hostas and garden accoutrements. It will also include five mature hostas taken directly from each of the private gardens on the tour that day.

These gardens will display hundreds of varieties of hostas and other shade-loving plants, nurtured for years by members of the Delmarva Hosta Society and now viewable to convention attendees.

The Delmarva society is hosting the Dixie Regional for the first time, and the convention will also include a keynote address by world-renowned hosta authority Mark Zilis, author of “The Hostapedia.” He will discuss his recent trip to Japan to study hostas in the wild.
