Harmonious Interiors organizing the Cape Region

Katie Langley enjoys the art of organization
April 7, 2023

Organized closets and work spaces can garner a good amount of attention on social media. The way everything seemingly fits perfectly into the frame can provide some with a substantial amount of visual satisfaction. But what happens when one needs to obtain an item from the seemingly perfectly organized closet or work space?

This is the predicament Katie Langley hopes to help residents in the Cape Region overcome. While maximizing the space for every little thing, the harmony of organization is at great risk for disturbance during utilization. Langley’s new business, Harmonious Interiors, hopes to not only create spaces worthy of a post, but equally utilitarian.

“I want to make it sustainable. I want to make it so that when I leave a space, you don't necessarily go back to being disorganized,” Langley said.

The Pennsylvania native is new to the area, having moved here in January, but she has always had a desire to lend a hand. With a background in psychology and a willingness to volunteer, Langley has found tremendous joy in helping improve the lives of others. In her most recent venture, she wants to help her clients create functional spaces that may make tasks easier for them.

Langley says her talent for organizing is natural, and she is able to quickly identify the most efficient ways a space can be used. After she develops her own vision for the space, she works with clients to discover how they would like to use the area. She has noticed that people can unintentionally convert a functioning closet into a storage closet, one shirt or household item at a time.

“What happens when you go into that closet and maybe you need the first thing that’s at the bottom of the giant pile of the stuff?” Langley asked. “How much time do you take to find it and to get to the bottom of the pile and then to put it back? Is that really helpful? Are you using everything in the closet?”

While some clients may be naturally disorganized, others may be tidy in most aspects of their life, but have a closet or room that has gotten out of hand. There may be items that hold meaning to the person or parts of an incomplete or neglected project. Langley said she walks a fine line when having conversations with her clients about things she thinks might not be needed. Not wanting to be mean, she asks what value something like a waffle iron might hold for a person. If they are making them frequently, then it might be a good object, but if they no longer make waffles or happen to have more than one, there might be a better place for them.

Langley said she strives for a personal connection with her clients so they understand that she is a professional but her work is tailored to them. Using an outside perspective, the organizer might be able to see potentials or solutions someone close to the items is struggling to find. Some instances may require a simple move to a more effective location. She said Harmonious Interiors will never force anyone to get rid of anything.

Appointments are scheduled in four-hour increments, something Langley does to try to reach as many clients in one week as possible. If someone is interested, Langley said they should not feel embarrassed when booking her service – she does not pass judgment. She said she believes her clients contract her business for a reason, and her only goal is to bring harmony to a person’s daily life by increasing their efficiency.

“This is a chance to make your life more functional, and if that's what's calling to you, if that's what speaking to you, we can do it together,” Langley said.

Prior to appointments, Langley offers a free consultation to discuss the space the client wants organized, and what their present and future needs are. There are projects that exceed four hours, but that would be communicated when the client establishes their desires. Wanting to remain efficient herself, Langley is only accepting clients in the Cape Region, north of Dewey, south of Lewes, and east of Georgetown.

She said she can work in several different spaces: offices, closets, cars, attics or entire rooms, if need be. Pricing will be billed accordingly, based on the type of project and the amount of time required.
