Hawthorne community dedicates new flagpole
A large number of neighbors from the Hawthorne community gathered Sept. 4 to dedicate a new flagpole.
The veterans committee sponsored the flagpole, and contributions were given by a majority of the people living in the community. Funds raised by the veterans committee were used to purchase the flagpole and flags, and pay for the cost of installation.
Eric Zlock, owner of Delaware Electric LLC, donated his time and the materials needed to light the flag at night.
During the ceremony Mario Pino, a trumpeter, played taps while the flag was raised. Then Terry Shay, in tartan and kilt, played a rendition of “America the Beautiful” on his bagpipes. Everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lord’s Prayer. After the ceremony, everyone present was invited by the veterans committee to share in a community-wide potluck in the cool of the clubhouse. Hamburgers and hot dogs were also provided by the veterans committee.
Organizers extend thanks who all who participated in making the flagpole project and dedication ceremony successful. Special thanks also go to Charles Conklin for handling the funds and to K.C. White for all the hours of planning and preparation.
