Healthy community walk supports Read Aloud June 10

May 25, 2023

As part of the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community, and to support children’s literacy, Read Aloud Delaware will host a satellite walk at 12 p.m., Saturday, June 10, around the Plantation Lakes Community in Millsboro.

This annual event is typically one of the children’s literacy program’s biggest fundraisers.

Walkers will meet at the community clubhouse parking lot at 20301 Charlotte Blvd., Millsboro. There will be 1- and 3-mile walk options for participants.

Walkers can form their own teams, join an existing Sussex County team, or make a donation to a registered Sussex County team or walker. All participants are urged to reach out to family and friends, and seek their support for this event.

To register or donate, go to walkforahealthycommunity.org, click donate, and select Read Aloud Delaware as a beneficiary. Donations also can be sent directly to the Sussex County Read Aloud office at 108 N. Bedford St., Georgetown, DE 19947.

Founded in 1983, Read Aloud Delaware’s mission is to create a lifelong impact through early childhood literacy. The vision is for every child in Delaware to have the fundamental literacy skills to succeed in school and life.

“Learning to read is essential in order to create a literate society,” said Stacy Penaranda, Read Aloud Delaware Sussex County director. “Just think about how the children we reach might someday teach others to read. We are creating lifelong readers and getting books into the hands of the students that need to increase their at-home access to age-appropriate, quality literature.”
