Henlopen City Oyster House chef to offer demo July 16
The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, July 16, at George H.P. Smith Park.
Executive Chef Justin Jordan of Henlopen City Oyster House will create two dishes during a 10 a.m. demonstration. Sautéed Georgia Royal Red Shrimp will be prepared with local peaches and basil relish. Massachusetts yellowfin tuna tartare will incorporate Dittmar Farms’ sungold tomatoes, local mint, lemon oil and Henlopen Sea Salt.
Summer harvest is in full swing, with cantaloupes arriving this week. There will also be peaches, blueberries, sweet corn, hybrid and heirloom tomatoes – both slicer and cherry, potatoes, radicchio, summer squashes, kale, bok choy, cauliflower, broccoli, radishes, carrots, Swiss chard, arugula, lettuces, pork sausages, tilapia fish, oysters, live crabs, hand-picked crabmeat, crab cakes, crab salad, grass-fed chicken, beef and pork, honey, mushrooms, eggs, yogurt, milk, butter, ice cream, kombucha, jams, fresh-baked breads, pastries made with fruit from market vendors, herb, veggie, and flower plants, cut-flower bouquets including sunflowers, locally roasted coffee and coffee drinks, and more.
The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is producer-only, so customers are able to buy directly from the farmer who grew the produce.
Children’s Storytime at the Market, a partnership with the Lewes Public Library, takes place at 10 a.m. Library volunteers read books about farming, gardening, nature and healthy eating at the yellow tent near the HLFM Information Tent.
The HLFM Big Raffle has three stupendous prizes, each valued at $1,000: Jazz Fest weekend tickets and dinner; the Fabu-Lewes-Feast including eight $125 restaurant gift cards; and a private, in-home three-course chef dinner with wine pairing for 10 by Chef Sean Corea. Tickets are on sale at the market, and the drawing is set for Sept. 3. Winner does not have to be present to win.
In case of inclement weather, the market moves to Lewes Elementary School parking lot at 820 Savannah Road. The Wednesday Market at Crooked Hammock Brewery is open weekly with 10 great farmers from 8 to 11 a.m. through September.
The market processes SNAP, WIC and SFMNP, and continues to match SNAP up to $20 per market, per customer. Customers may go to the SNAP tent to process SNAP/EBT.
The HLFM continues its food pantry purchase program. Market customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk and other food from growers at the market to donate to this program every Saturday. At the end of the market, the produce and other foods are gathered and given to various food pantries including Epworth church and Casa San Francisco. The market team thanks customers for their generosity.
The circle in front of the Fred Thomas Building at the foot of Dupont Avenue will be open for handicap drop-off and pickup.
