Historian to discuss Emmett Till murder trial Sept. 10

August 30, 2025

Ronald Collins, a renowned legal scholar and Lewes Public Library distinguished lecturer, will host a multimedia presentation, Remembering the Emmett Till Murder 70 Years Later, at 5 p.m, Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the library, 111 Adams Ave. in Lewes, and online via Zoom.

In August 1955, two white men kidnapped and murdered Emmett Till, a Black teen, for allegedly whistling at a white woman in her family’s grocery store. The publicity surrounding Till’s murder served as a flashpoint in the history of civil rights in America.

Collins will discuss this famous case and its historical significance against the backdrop of racial justice in today’s America. Jack M. Smith, son of Robert B. Smith, the lead prosecutor in the Till murder case, will join Collins in conversation.

At registration, participants will be asked to select virtual or in-person attendance. To sign up, go to lewes.lib.de.us or call 302-645-2733.
