H.O. Brittingham Elementary fifth-graders serve as safety patrol monitors

November 9, 2015

This year at H.O. Brittingham Elementary School in Milton, fifth-graders have been offered a leadership opportunity through AAA’s Safety Patrol initiative.

Matthew Eskridge from AAA  came to HOB Sept. 25 to talk to students about what it means to be a member of the safety patrol. He named several famous Americans who were once on safety patrol in their schools and communities, including LeBron James, Jimmy Carter and Joe Biden.

The interested students were asked to complete an application and get a personal reference from a teacher or other adult in the elementary building. Eskridge and fifth-grade teacher Holly Grandfield distributed safety belts and badges Oct. 21 to 32 qualified fifth-graders.

“We are very excited as this new program is already in full swing. Students who are members of the safety patrol are now monitoring the hallways in the morning as students enter the building, and in the afternoon during dismissal. We believe that the hallways are safer for all of our students, and our fifth-graders are getting their chance to let their leadership skills shine,” said Grandfield.
