HO Brittingham Elementary honors veterans at school assembly

November 24, 2025

H.O. Brittingham Elementary School welcomed dozens of veterans and their families to its Veterans Day assembly, an annual tradition that celebrates the bravery, sacrifice and service of the school community’s military heroes.

This year’s event invited students’ family members who have served in the United States armed forces to be honored. The assembly began with a beautiful rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” performed by fifth-grade teacher Wendy Coverdale, while the Cape Henlopen High School JROTC presented the flags. It also featured patriotic musical performances from every grade level, with students singing songs that filled the room with pride and emotion. The performances showcased the hard work of the school’s music department educators and highlighted the joy students felt in celebrating the guests of honor.

Throughout the ceremony, students delivered special readings, sharing reflections on what Veterans Day means to them, along with messages of appreciation for the sacrifices made by military families. These thoughtful tributes created meaningful moments that resonated with both students and visitors. Principal Yvette Davenport expressed gratitude for the strong turnout and the opportunity to bring the school community together.

“Our Veterans Day assembly is seen as one of the most important events of the year,” she said. “It allows our students to learn about service, sacrifice and gratitude while honoring the veterans who are part of our school family. We are proud to recognize their contributions and celebrate the values they represent.”

The assembly concluded with a standing ovation for all veterans in attendance.
