H.O. Brittingham students collect food for Casa San Francisco

As part of the last unit in their reading curriculum, students in Stephanie Shuttleworth’s class at H.O. Brittingham focused on the local community.
While reading the core text, “Field Guide to Your Community,” students were surprised to learn that Delaware was one of three states in the U.S. that had the highest percentage of people who felt they were food-insecure, meaning they didn’t feel as if they had enough food on a daily basis.
The class held a group discussion and ultimately decided they would conduct a food drive for the local homeless shelter, Casa San Francisco. As a result of this idea, HOB students came together and collected a trunk full of food items. Shuttleworth’s class then walked to Casa and delivered the bags and boxes of food.
The staff members at Casa San Francisco were grateful and excited to see the students and receive the donation.
