Hopkins Heartland hosts hockey banquet

State champions of 2020 honored
June 23, 2021

A banquet in a barn: country boys and girls gettin’ down on the Hopkins Farm.

The celebration of Cape Henlopen High School’s 2020 field hockey state championship took place June 22 at Hopkins Heartland off Fisher Road. It was so cool to leave the barn doors open and soak up the local atmosphere.

“Ingrid and Amy [Hopkins] just made this available to us when we asked,” said Joy Sabbagh of the booster club. “This is so special and so unique. It makes for a great evening.”

Cape’s 2020 state championship was the eighth for coach Kate Austin since 2012. The Vikings also won the state title in 2011 under head coach Nicole Hughes.

Cape also won state championships under coach Carolyn Ivins (1979) and Ruth Skoglund (1995) for a total of 11 titles in field hockey. Girls’ lacrosse has won 12 titles. All 23 state championship signs are bolted to the bleachers at Champions Stadium.

Cape will return 12 seniors for the 2021 season. The theme is front-loaded firepower. The freshman class of 2020 put eight players on varsity; obviously, they all return.
