House of Axe now open on Route 1 outside Rehoboth
Looking to provide beachgoers with a year-round entertainment option, father-and-daughter team Eli and Danielle Zacharia have opened House of Axe outside Rehoboth Beach.
“It’s such a good time and really provides for a fun family night,” said Danielle during an interview March 15. “It’s also a fun activity for bachelor and bachelorette parties or a corporate outing.”
Located on Route 1 along the Forgotten Mile, just south of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal bridge, House of Axe opened March 11. Danielle said she was inspired to bring a business dedicated to ax throwing last year after having done it herself while on a business trip in Florida.
“We should do something like this back home,” said Danielle of her initial reaction to ax throwing. A little more than a year later, she and her father are making it happen. “We just thought it would be great.”
House of Axe features 10 lanes. There are three ax weights for customers to choose from – 1 pound, 1 1/4 pounds, and 1 1/2 pounds. The wood used for targets is cottonwood.
Danielle has been certified as an ax-throwing coach. There are a lot of safety measures to consider, but also a few different techniques for throwing an ax, she said.
“It can be intimidating at first, but it’s fun, and I can show the customers the proper techniques,” said Danielle. “Of course, there are safety needs that have to be discussed.”
Danielle said House of Axe is actively pursuing membership with the World Axe Throwing League, which would bring tournaments to the area.
In addition to the storefront, House of Axe offers a trailer carrying an ax-throwing cage that can be rented for parties. That will be fun for private outdoor events or larger events where there are food vendors and other activities, said Danielle.
This is a new business for Eli and Danielle, but the family has owned businesses in Rehoboth for decades. Eli has been a T-shirt shop owner in Rehoboth Beach since 1991 – he owns and operates the Tidal Rave 5 & 10 on the Boardwalk and next door to House of Axe. Danielle grew up working for her dad, but this is the first time she’s working with her dad.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity,” said Danielle.
The cost at House of Axe is $30 an hour per person for those over age 15. For customers 15 and under, the cost is $15 an hour per person. There is a 20 percent discount for veterans, police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and other first responders.
The hours of operation are 4 to 9 p.m., Friday; 2 to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday; and by appointment Tuesday through Thursday. Danielle said the hours will expand as summer nears.
