Inaugural Milton New Music & Wind Fest set Oct. 1

September 15, 2022

The inaugural Milton New Music & Wind Fest, a family friendly kite-flying event with live musical entertainment, will take place from 2  p.m. until dark, Saturday, Oct. 1, on Federal Street at the entrance to the Milton Trail. Attendees can bring chairs, blankets, picnics and their favorite kites.

Presented by Bill Warrell’s newly established Federal Street Arts Project and the Town of Milton, the event will be set to a soundtrack of new music from WOWD LP Radio. A live concert at 3 p.m. will spotlight Janel Leppin’s Ensemble Volcanic Ash septet performing her exciting compositions. Defying category, Ensemble Volcanic Ash has been called a chamber-jazz-punk hybrid, an apt accompaniment for the drama of kites swirling in the wind.

In addition to Leppin on cello, Ensemble Volcanic Ash consists of Luke Stewart (bass), Kim Sator (harp), Anthony Pirog (guitar), Brian Settles (tenor sax), Sarah Hughes (alto sax) and Larry Ferguson (drums). The concert is dedicated to the creative spirits of two recently departed compatriot musicians, trumpeter Jaimie Branch and cellist Abdul Wadud.

Warrell spent his 50-year career producing, presenting and creating art in the Washington, D.C. area. He founded key cultural venues including D.C. Space, Nightclub 9:30, Pension Building, Freedom Plaza and Firehouse Studio; he also directed a nonprofit arts organization for 25 years, District Curators Inc. He has recently retired to work as a painter in Milton, newly establishing the Federal Street Arts Project.

The festival is made possible by the generous support of the Warrell/Feldner Family Fund, Leonard Brown Composer’s Fund, Dogfish Head Brewery and Nobody Media.
