Lewes-based tattoo artist Fred Giovannitti is known across the country for his large, deeply-meaningful-to-the-customer tattoos. Yet, a new service for a small tattoo is proving to be just as meaningful to clients – a soundwave image that plays up to 30 seconds of recorded sound.

For many years, Giovannitti owned and operated tattoo parlors in Las Vegas. Like many other people, he and his family moved to Delaware to be closer to family while his kids grew up. For the past four years, he’s owned and operated Ink & Energy Tattooing, an appointment-only studio in Nassau.

Continuing to hone his craft, Giovannitti recently started offering Soundwave Tattoos. Until recently, when he hired artist Savannah Maher to help meet demand, he was the only tattoo artist offering the service on the Delmarva Peninsula.

Giovannitti said Skin Motion, the inventor of Soundwave Tattoos, reached out to see if he’d be interested in offering their product. He said he signed on after the company explained the idea – using a tattoo to memorialize a person’s favorite saying or a song with a special meaning.

It’s just a cool use of technology, said Giovannitti.

The technology is similar to scanning QR codes, he said, but instead of using a big square full of smaller squares, it uses an image of a soundwave. An app downloaded from Skin Motion allows the tattoo to work.

Looking over an online map of artists on the Skin Motion website, Giovannitti said Ink & Energy is definitely the only studio within two hours of Lewes offering the service. The map shows dozens of artists across the country, but the next closest are in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

Giovannitti said one of the keys to the tattoo is putting it in a place that’s easily accessible for viewing by phone. One client wanted to get it on the back of her shoulder, but it would have been nearly impossible for her to get the app to work, he said.

The Soundwave Tattoos start at $300. Giovannitti said that’s his going rate for a three-hour session. A simple black soundwave design doesn’t take nearly three hours, but Giovannitti said he wants to work with the customer to give them their money’s worth.

“I’d rather do all kinds of detail,” he said. “People get so excited when it’s all said and done.”
