James J. Schroeder, veteran, faithful parishioner
James J. “Jim” Schroeder of Millsboro was called home Sunday afternoon, May 25, 2025, surrounded by his wife and children, following several months of illness. He was born June 12, 1941, in Allentown, Pa., to Sarah (Doherty) and John Schroeder. Jim graduated from Allentown Central Catholic High School and attended King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., earning a B.S. degree in business administration (’66). He served in the U.S. Army as a commissioned officer, Corps of Engineers, serving in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division.
Jim and family resided for several years in Seaford, initially working for DuPont, and went on to hold positions at several other companies, including Fredrick Ford. He was an active parishioner for many years at Our Lady of Lourdes in Seaford and later at St. Michael the Archangel in Georgetown. At various times in his life, he was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club, and VFW. He also served as an usher at St. Michael's.
Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rose (Wittman); four children, John (wife Tammi), Anne (husband Eric), George (wife Nori) and Jamie (wife Robin); 10 grandchildren, Anna, Allie, Seamus, Everlei, Seoirse, Sadie, Sean, Rhea, Jamilyn and George; sister-in-law, Pat Schroeder; sister, Mary Polansky (Mike); sister-in-law, Ginger; sister, Julie Johnson (Sam); and many many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents; and two brothers, Ed and Bill.
Rose and Jim’s family were his most beloved accomplishments, and he was often heard telling (and retelling) stories of grandchildren and their latest adventures and accomplishments. He took particular pride in announcing the birth of a grandchild to relatives and friends and, really, anyone who was nearby. He was always pleased to gather at various family holiday events, weddings, baptisms, and Schroederfest throughout the years, especially during Bethany Beach week with his grandchildren over the past 16 years.
During his life, he was known by several names: Jimmy, Jim, Uncle Jimmy, Uncle Bad, Pop, and Boppy to his grandchildren. Regardless of the name or title, he always strived to instigate laughter and fun with family and friends.
In addition to family life, Jim was a consummate gardener, always working on vegetables, roses, lilies, and various landscaping projects. He was also an avid fisherman, often traveling with rod and tackle box for impromptu fishing trips coming home from work, as well as afternoon fishing adventures up Nanticoke River.
A visitation will be held from 10 to 10:45 a.m., Tuesday, June 24, at Mary Mother of Peace Church, 30839 Mount Joy Road, Millsboro, where the eulogy will begin at 10:45 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow the eulogy at 11 a.m., with interment to follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.
