James Paul Gunning III, master captain

James Paul Gunning III, 74, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away at home Monday, Jan. 23, 2017. He was born Friday, Jan. 8, 1943, in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late, James P Gunning II and Ethel Viscomi.

Mr. Gunning worked in the Federal Court in Wilmington for many years. He was a retired court transcriber. He was a charter captain and had a master captain's license; he and his wife owned a charter boat. In 1986 he won the National Typing Championship. He was a 32nd Degree Master Mason in the Granite-Corinthian Lodge. In his spare time he loved fishing and hunting.

Mr. Gunning is survived by beloved wife of 30 years, Valerie J. (Bush) Gunning; his son, James Gunning IV of West Chester, Pa.; his daughter, Kim Myles of Galloway, N.J.; two grandchildren; and his sister, Anne Marie Dahan of Norristown, Pa.

Memorial Service will be held Friday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may visit beginning at 10 a.m.
