Jani to present Reclaiming Medicine's Spiritual Roots

Weekly Summer Spirituality Series kicks off May 28
May 24, 2015

Dr. Uday Jani, a local and well-respected physician with a fellowship in integrated medicine, will present Reclaiming Medicine's Spiritual Roots at the Summer Spirituality Series Thursday, May 28. The weekly presentations will be held in the Parish Hall of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 211 Mulberry St. in Lewes, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Dr. Jani, MD, FACP, will discuss why it is important that including spirituality in your health care plans can be a powerful source of strength and healing. While technology has led to phenomenal advances and the ability to prolong life, it has also resulted in a shift from a caring, service-oriented model to a more sure-oriented one.

Research suggests that more than 75 percent of patients would like to discuss spiritual issues as part of their care, yet only 10 to 20 percent of physicians do so. However, there is a welcome trend that is starting to move the needle. One of integrative medicine's greatest strengths has always been the continued emphasis on understanding the patient's social, cultural and psychological environment, and how spirituality connects to all.

Recent medical studies indicate that people who describe themselves as spiritual exhibit few self-destructive behaviors such as smoking, drug and alcohol abuse, even suicide; and experience less stress, and a great satisfaction with life overall. Physicians need to address and be attentive to all suffering experienced by their patients, beyond just the physical. Healing occurs when physicians truly listen to what their patients are saying, and develop therapeutic plans that reflect those individual's hopes, fears, and beliefs.

Dr. Jani, a board-certified Internist, completed a two-year Integrative Medicine fellowship in 2012 at the University of Arizona under Dr. Andrew Weil, the renowned founder of Integrative Medicine. The Fellowship in Integrative Medicine has achieved international recognition as the leading integrative medical education program in the world. Dr. Jani is in private practice at Shore View Personal Care.

Each Thursday night, through Sept. 3, expert presenters will engage participants in the parish hall of St. Peter's Episcopal Church.  Fellowship and King's Ice Cream will follow each presentation. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend these free sessions, which are designed for reflection and dialogue. It is a chance to learn more about a fascinating topic and engage in subsequent discussion.
