Join in Lewes Memorial Day Parade

May 23, 2019

As President of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 17 and the wife of a veteran, I hold a special place in my heart for the parents, siblings, spouses, and friends of those who served. I can’t help but think of all the men and women who have gone to fight for this great nation and didn’t return home.

While we are all guilty of celebrating the unofficial start of summer and encouraging each other to “have a good weekend,” it is important to remember the reason for the holiday: Memorial Day is the day Americans set aside to honor those brave men and women who met tragic ends while defending our freedom. It is our duty to honor their sacrifices, to pray for their families, and to bow our heads in recognition of their service.

And this duty is taken very seriously in this area, as recently witnessed by an amazing turnout during the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Weekend.

So once again, we ask our community to join together and pay tribute at the annual Memorial Day Parade in Lewes to be held Monday, May 27.  Any military member now serving and all veterans are encouraged to participate - you may walk or ride - just smile and wave! The parade will begin at approximately 11 a.m., on Schley Avenue (behind Lewes Presbyterian Church parking lot), proceed to Savannah Road, travel over the canal toward the beach, and end at Post 17. A Memorial Day Ceremony will begin at approximately 1 p.m., in the pavilion; all are welcome. Please contact Murt Foos at 301-706-0213 if you are interested in being in the parade or know a veteran whom you wish to honor this year.

So please - all friends, neighbors and visitors - come line the streets and show your support; wear your poppy with pride and don your patriotic attire.  To learn more about the Memorial Day Parade and other Post events, please visit us on Facebook (American Legion Post 17, Lewes).

The American Legion Family of Post 17 is very proud and thankful for the support we had for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Weekend - and continue to receive from residents, businesses and fraternal organizations of Sussex County.  Thank you.

Sincerely, in service not self,

Murt Foos
president, Auxiliary Unit 17
