Joseph Griffith Baker, Amtrak retiree

Joseph Griffith Baker, 92, went home to be with the Lord and into the loving arms of his wife and son Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016.

He was born June 24, 1924, in Blairsville, Pa., the son of Joseph J Baker and Katherine (Griffith) Baker, and one of 11 children. He and his family moved to Claymont in 1964, and in 1989, he and his wife Mae, moved to southern Delaware.

He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and then spent several years as a carpenter. After moving to Delaware he returned to working for the railroad, and retired from Amtrak. He served in the Army during World War II, proudly serving his county.

Mr. Baker was a permanent deacon in the Catholic Church, serving at Holy Rosary in Claymont and then at Mary Mother of Peace, Millsboro. He was an avid Notre Dame fan, passing along a tradition from his grandfather and father.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife Mae, son Daniel; grandson Mark; three brothers; and one sister.

He is survived by his children, Karen (Richard) Lathbury of Lewes, Jeb (Linda) Baker of Fenwick Island, Tom (Paulette) Baker of Wilmington, John Baker of New Orleans, La., and Suzanne (Ron) Milne of Wilmington; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

A visitation will take place from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 23, at Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church, 30839 Mount Joy Road, Millsboro. A committal service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 26, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
