Junior sailor continues success at recent regattas

December 18, 2021

Local junior sailor Alden Durrell of Rehoboth Beach, representing both Proteus and Annapolis Yacht Clubs, recently competed in two national-level events, including the USODA 2021 New England Championships in Newport, R.I. (Sail Newport), and the USODA2021 Southeastern Championships in Charleston, S.C. (Hobcaw Yacht Club). Both of these regattas were pre-qualifiers for the 2022 USODA National Team.

The regattas, organized respectively by Sail Newport and Hobcaw Yacht Club, in connection with the Unites States Optimist Dinghy Association, attracted more than 200 of the top-rated Optimist sailors from multiple countries, including the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Bermuda, Bahamas, Virgin Islands and Venezuela.

Although Alden faced significantly higher levels of competition, he remained focused and completed all his races, increasing his overall rankings and achieving his personal goals. Alden will be advancing to the USODA White Fleet over the winter months as he continues to compete at regattas in Miami, Key Largo, and St. Petersburg, Fla.
