Katie Maher, local Girl Scout, partners with library to create Mother-Daughter Book Club

Group meets 11 a.m., Saturday, March 3
February 23, 2012

Katie Maher, a seventh-grade student at Sussex Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Girl Scout in Cadette Troop 1485 of Lewes, is partnering with Maureen Miller of the Lewes Public Library to create a Mother-Daughter Book Club.

The Silver Award is the highest national award a Cadette Girl Scout can earn. Cadette Girl Scouts are in grades six to eight. To earn the award, a Cadette Girl Scout must complete a take-action project that she has identified a need for her in her community. The award allows a Cadette Girl Scout to discover, connect and take action in her community, the three keys to the Girl Scout leadership experience. Besides working on her Silver Award, Katie is also working toward her Program Aide Award by working with a Daisy Girl Scout troop. She is also an honor roll student, dances at Coastal Dance Academy and is active at her church, St. Jude the Apostle in Lewes.

“Katie will be working to put together Book Club in Bag projects for the Lewes library as well as sponsoring the Mother-Daughter Book Club,” said Miller.  The bags will contain everything someone needs to have a book club on her own, including 10 copies of the book, a discussion guide, guidelines on how to read a book for a book club discussion as well as several fun items like invitations, recipes, and bookmarks. “Katie is working diligently to get this project off the ground,” said Miller.

The book club meets on the first Saturday of each month. It is a way for mothers and daughters to spend some quality time together. “My mom and I love to read,” says Katie, “and this is a great way to get my mom to read some of the books I am interested in as well as encouraging me to read a few favorites or classics from her youth.” One of the goals of the club is to combine both current and classic readings in their selections. “We’d also like to add some fun activities, like seeing movies made from the books we have read,” Maher said.

The club is accepting new readers and is currently reading "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins.  Those interested in joining the discussion of this book should contact Maureen Miller at the library for a copy or join the club with their own copy. The club will be discussing "The Hunger Games" at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 3, at the Lewes Public Library.  Discussion will be followed by the presentation of the group’s next reading. Refreshments will be served.
